Hi Pre-K Families! Announcements:
Sunscreen: Applying sunscreen before school is a great idea. If you would like your child to apply sunscreen for our second outdoor time which happens around 1 pm, please send some in their backpacks. I can help them apply it, or they can do it themselves if they want to. Another week in the books. I can't believe we are so close to wrapping up the school year. Watching your children learn and grow is a true pleasure! We started our camping theme this week and the kids are LOVING it! Many of them have shared their personal experiences with camping along with what happens on their camping trips: fishing, making pancakes, swimming, etc. In the classroom camping area, they have started fires to roast marshmallows and hot dogs! They have also packed up the gear from the camping area to "go on adventures" to other places. Both classes found somewhere to "swim" and jumped in! During this time, they have let me know whether it is night time or morning, and I have adjusted the forest/camping music accordingly. Outside this week, we used some color frames I made out of cardboard. I cut a square out of each and wrote "find something" and added a color with each. When we went out to the rock garden, tennis courts, and baseball field, they all found so many different colors! Some were wondering if we would find certain colors such as orange and purple, but they quickly found the orange fence for the baseball field. Purple was a little more challenging, but they found tiny purple flowers growing near the big rocks at the rock garden. These were really easy to make and can definitely be done at home as well :). Other variations of this could be finding shapes or finding certain nature objects (trees, branches, caterpillars). On Wednesday and Thursday, all the kids made a fun their paper s'more with their names. They added the graham cracker and melty chocolate with brown paper, and then each marshmallow was one letter of their name. Length of names have been discussed a lot at snack time due to their name tags, but they also made observations about name lengths based on how long everyone's s'mores were! Have a fantastic long weekend, Deanna

Hi Pre-K Families! Announcements: The last day of pre-k is Thursday, June 10th. Please either apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before school, or send sunscreen with them a bottle of sunscreen so we can apply it before we go outside Please also send your child to school with a hat (sun hat, baseball hat, etc) I apologize for the late blog post. We had a very, very hot week. We spent a lot of time outside, but mostly underneath some trees either climbing, dancing, or playing with some of our outside toys. Please send in a water bottle each day, as we are taking those outside to keep hydrated as the weather spikes. In both classes, we took out the tent and two tunnels outside to set up under a tree. This was the first time we had these items outside and they all had a ton of fun! Kindergarten stopped outside a few times this week to play with us right before lunch, and the kids loved seeing them! In the beginning of the week, both classes discussed emotions and made some with play doh on printed out blank faces. I could see each child working intently on putting the parts of the face in certain places. For example: they made sure to make the eyebrows higher when making a “surprised” face. On Wednesday, many kiddos were using stamps and then ended up stacking the stamps on their sides to see how high they could make a tower! I believe 11 or 12 was the highest tower made. Can you believe there is only 3 weeks left of preschool?! It doesn’t seem real! Thank you for all your help and support through this “different” school year. There aren’t a ton of pictures this week since I was out Monday and it was just so hot. Stay cool! Deanna Hi Pre-K Families! Announcements:
Last Day of Pre-K Info: We typically end one week before the rest of the older grades in order for me to clean out the entire classroom and pack it all up for the summer. This year, the last day of preschool will be Thursday, June 10th. That last week of school will be filled with fun outdoor activities (weather depending) and celebrating the end of our year. It was certainly a different type of school year, but your kids and I had a wonderful time together. The week before and last week of school, I will be sending home each child with a myriad of items such as: their extra clothes, any leftover art work, name tags, etc. We had so much fun indoors and out this week. On Monday and Tuesday, the kids arrived to many chairs on the rug. I let them know those chairs could be anything they wanted them to be. So much imagination blossomed! On Monday, the chairs became drivers seats for monster trucks, many trucks needed to stop for gas and one didn’t need gas because it was electric. On Tuesday, the chairs became seats on a boat that turned into a submarine. This activity is something great do at home with your kiddos and other siblings, too! We spent time in the big climbing tree at the rock garden all week long. All the kids were taking calculated risks while they climbed. You might hear them say this: “The most important part of climbing is your feet.” I said that quite a bit throughout the week. Being a climber myself, I know the importance of foot work and having places where your feet are secure to push yourself up. In the beginning of the week, many kids were reaching for higher branches to try to pull themselves up, and by the end, they were looking for knots on the trees to secure their feet. Their confidence from Monday and Tuesday to Wednesday and Thursday was amazing to see! Another phrase I like to use (which I may have borrowed from one of our wonderful teachers, Ben Weiss…) is: “what’s your plan?” Before any of the kids walk across rocks, climb something, etc, I always ask what their plan is so they can slow down for a moment to figure it out. When kids are having fun, it can sometimes be hard for them to think steps ahead and just “do” instead. Asking what their plan is can be a helpful way for them to pause and build critical thinking skills which is a great transferrable skill as they get older. On Wednesday and Thursday, musical instruments were brought out to the playground. Both classes ended up doing a marching band/musical parade all around the playground! There were xylophones, drums, bells, shakers, and rhythm sticks. Each child tried almost all of the different instruments as they marched around the playground. Inside this week, we used q-tips to fill in pictures with small dots on them. Using q-tips to dot pictures is a great pre-writing skill — even if your child is already writing. It strengthens their finger muscles and helps them be more precise. We also spent some time punching out shapes with our paper punchers and glueing them on to different designs on construction paper, which is another great fine motor skill for their hands! Have a great and sunny weekend, Deanna Hi Preschool Families! Announcements:
This will be a short but sweet post. On Monday and Tuesday, I read a story called Percy's Museum by Sara O'Leary. It is about a child named Percy who moves from the city to a small town, much like Middlesex. Percy realizes that living in a small town is fun in a different way, so he collects many items outside and puts them in frames. He has new friends over for a museum in his backyard. We then spent a ton of time outside collecting items that we could use to make pictures. We discussed the meaning of flat and thin before collecting items. After lunch, they made their frames and added their collections onto contact paper. They're now hanging up in our classroom! Also on Monday and Tuesday, they practiced their gross motor skills with throwing bean bags at different shaped squares and rectangles taped to the wall. They had a great time trying to hit the shapes! Next time we play this, we will add in letters and numbers to try to aim at. Have a great weekend with your kids! Deanna |
