Rumney Preschool
Ms. Murray's Classes
Hi Families! Announcements:
Week after week, your lovely kids continue to make deep connections with their peers and practice kindness. It is great to watch them start to become friends with one another since they will be going to Rumney together for years to come :) We spent a lot of time with colors and color mixing this week. Although we have already solidified our color knowledge, playing with colors is really fun! We listened to a story on the TV called Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni. In the story, Little Blue and Little Yellow hugged each other and turned green! They were all very excited to see that blue and yellow makes green and couldn’t wait to play with the colors after listening to the story. In both classes, after listening to the story, I put out some yellow and blue water and some blue and yellow ice cubes! One friend was so excited as they watched the colors mix to green and declared: “MS. MURRAY! SCIENCE!” They loved scooping and pouring the water and also enjoyed watching the ice cubes melt. Outside, we started to sled! We spend a lot of time in the winter sledding on the hill right outside our classroom door. All together, we each got a sled and practiced how to sit on it and hold on to the handles. They were laughing and screaming the whole time! Something else we did in class this week was play with beads. I got styrofoam for flower arrangements at dollar tree and stuck pipe cleaners inside. They had to match the beads to the pipe cleaner of the same color. It was tricky because they had to steady the pipe cleaner with one hand and “string” the bead on with the other. Our winter books are now out on the shelves. I am looking forward to reading those now that the snow is here! Ask Your Child: Did you play with colored ice cubes this week? What colors were they? What happened when the ice cubes melted? Have a great weekend, Deanna

Hi Families! Announcements:
We had so much fun this week! I want to thank you all for joining me for conferences. One thing I love to do is share with you all how amazing your kiddos are, but I think you all already know they are pretty amazing :) The weather was really surprising this week! One day we were in full snow gear and the next day we were in just jackets and boots. They all enjoyed seeing snow on the playground. I think they are really going to enjoy sledding down the hill once the snow starts sticking. We packed a lot of fun and exciting things in this week at school. On Monday while outside, we took out the alligator seesaw. After playing with it for a while, they started wondering what would happen if they stood on it. Risky play is something so important for preschool aged children! Taking risks in a safe setting is how children build resilience. It warms my heart to know that they are so comfortable at school to start taking calculated risks. Here’s a blurb from a risk taking article from Bright Horizons: “Taking risks in a safe environment builds confidence and teaches valuable life skills.” I will link this article in the weekly email. After standing on the seesaw, they noticed how it tipped back and forth depending on size. What a great experience! Also on Monday, they all decided to host a dance in the block area. We dressed up in all of the dress up clothes and they danced and laughed! They did bring to my attention that we don’t have that many “fancy clothes” in the dress up. I am going to go through all my extra dress up clothes, but if anyone has any fancy dresses/skirts, shirts, accessories, or shoes that you no longer need, please let me know! In both classes this week, we explored dot stickers. They were out on the tables at drop off and we also took them out again later at center time which happens after lunch. They enjoyed peeling off the stickers and color matching them to the lines I drew on the big paper with markers. This is a great pre-writing skill because it works their finger muscles by peeling off the stickers. Another fun thing we did in both classes was exploring foil! In the morning on Monday and Wednesday, there were cookie sheets on the table with letters on them. All around were little balls of foil. They worked hard to unwrap them and found magnetic letters inside! Once they opened one, they looked at the cookie sheets to match the letters. This is a great matching activity that helps them become more aware of what letters look like. Later in the day, they did foil painting with q tips and paint. We did some color mixing! Some friends enjoyed doing still life paintings with our pretend animals. On Wednesday this week, the Middlesex snowplow came to school! Rumney named it Snow Fight. Some kids were a little nervous about the size and how loud it was while turned on. We talked about it being okay to just watch from the side. A few kiddos wanted to sit in the seat and honk the horn. They noticed that the tires were taller than them! Seeing big trucks is always a fun experience. On Wednesday and Thursday on the playground, we were pretending to be dinosaurs. I was dubbed the “dinosaur keeper” and had to chase all the dinos that got out of the cage. I think this is quickly becoming their favorite game. We also turned the house on the playground into a cafe where we got to order chicken nuggets and sandwiches. Ask Your Child: Did you use foil this week? What was inside the foil balls? Is foil shiny? Did you paint on foil? Have a fantastic week off with your kiddos, I look forward to seeing you all after break! Deanna Hi Families! Announcements:
About conferences: We will meet on zoom (I will send out a reminder beforehand!). Prior to the conference, I will give you a progress report that has some fun pictures of your child and we will talk about how much they love school! *If your conference is scheduled before your child’s school day this week — for example if you have a conference on Tuesday, but your child doesn’t come to school until Wednesday, I will screen share to show you the progress report and give you the hard copy on Wednesday.* Conference time is a great time to ask me ANY questions at all. I am always happy to help! I look forward to meeting with all of you :) It is starting to get pretty chilly and we did have a bit of snow on Thursday. Please make sure your child is coming to school every day with waterproof mittens. Thin knit gloves were great for the last few weeks, but now it is a little too cold for that. On Monday, there was a delivery from a very large truck! We were on the playground and decided to go and check it out. Everyone was speculating what was in the truck and why it was at school. It was food! We watched the delivery people bring the food and milk into school on carts. We stood outside and looked at the truck and compared big and small things. For example: “Is a car bigger or smaller than the truck? Is the truck bigger or smaller than the school?” Also on Monday, we used a hand mixer to make fluffy soapy water to play in. They had a blast! In both classes, we practiced giving “haircuts” to paper bags and construction paper people. This is great to build on their fine motor skills to use scissors. If your child is 3, I will gently help with directions and examples on how to use scissors. I am not that concerned about it being “right” and are more concerned about them being safe! Something that is helpful for kiddos is to put the scissors on the table so and help them put their thumb in the smaller part and keep their thumb “towards the sky” so they will have a reminder on how to hold it. We also ripped paper and masking tape which are preparations for mastering using scissors. On Wednesday, we read a book called Sweater Weather by Matt Phelan. It is a sweet story about a grown up bear and seven baby bears who need to get their sweaters on. By the time the bears get all their sweaters on and get outside, it’s dark out! After we read the story, we glued yarn onto construction paper sweaters. The MT class will do this next week. On Thursday, it started snowing while we were on the playground! Everyone was running around so excited. I heard one friend yell out how happy they were that it is FINALLY snowing! While on the playground, we played with trucks and other items from the shed. When we went inside, we played the board game Snail’s Pace Race. Everyone gathered around and took turns rolling the die to see which snail would make it across the finish line first! Ask Your Child: What was the temperature like on the playground this week? Have a great weekend! Deanna |
