Ms. Murray's Classes
Hi Families! Announcements:
We had a fun week inside and outside. It is great to get to the point where we don’t need snow gear. They were all excited about that. In the MT class, they had an interest in making forts with the rest mats. They enjoyed working together to use the mats to make big and small forts. Some of them covered the forts with sheets and blankets and made houses for our stuffies. Both classes enjoyed having puppet shows! On Tuesday, they used these words to write out tickets to the show: - Puppet show - Ticket - Puppet - Finger puppet They were very interested in the letters and making tickets look real. Kids of this age really love real objects and things that adults use. You might notice that they might want to use real tools or utensils (oppose to ones directly made for kids). On Thursday, they enjoyed working together to make a fun puppet scene. In both classes, there were many audience members of the shows, they all had fun! Everyone saw Bonne this week for the annual hearing screening. She took in one kiddo at a time and they listened to words and pointed to the pictures. Bonne will be in contact with you if she has any concerns about your child’s hearing. Both classes enjoyed playing Spring Bingo this week (which was dubbed “Springo” by a few pals on Tuesday). Bingo is such a fun and quick game. They were learning these words: across, down, diagonal. They were all supportive of one another when someone got a bingo. We talked about the fact that everyone will get a bingo. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we brought big trucks outside. The tennis courts were in use by another class on Tuesday, so they used them on a small hill and filled the trucks up with pine cones and rocks and sent them down the hill. On Wednesday, we got to use the tennis courts. We brought chalk and cars. They had an amazing time! They traced their friends with chalk and added facial features after. We also drew a long and winding road so they could drive the cars on it. Having those turns help their gross motor development! On Thursday, a group of friends spent some time in the block area making something tall. I helped start it with three very long/tall blocks. I heard some amazing communication as they built around those pieces. Here are some quotes: “we need to build a sturdy base” “put blocks around the bottom to keep it stable” and “put it on gently so it won’t fall”. As a team, they decided when they wanted to knock it down and did that together — following one of the big rules in the class which is: If you build it, only you get to knock it down. The first slideshow below is from last week and the second one is from this week. Tons of fun pictures! Ask Your Child: Did you wear a rain suit outside? Where did you play when you went outside? Did you bring anything with you (ex: chalk)? Have a good weekend! Deanna

Hi Families! Announcements:
What a wet, muddy, and windy week. Both classes got to enjoy playing in the gym and they were all SO excited — they love the gym! They enjoy kicking and collecting balls and jumping/tumbling on the mats. On Monday, many kids were interested in crowns and cut outs of flowers, so we made flower crowns. Crowns were a big hit on Wednesday as well! Both classes enjoyed cutting and glueing, it is one of their favorite activities. We played with a marble run and both classes and they LOVED it! What a fantastic activity to see them work together to problem solve and build something. They gathered together and celebrated when the marbles went through and were kind to one another if it didn’t quite work yet. They have created an amazing classroom community. Something we practiced in the MT class (and will do in the WTh class next week) is visual discrimination. I had some cards that have flat shapes stacked on top of each other. They had to figure out which one had to go on the bottom, the middle, and the top, based on the picture. If anyone is interested in having these at home, I can print some out for you! Ask Your Child: Did you play with a marble run this week? How does it work? Did you work together to build it? Have a good weekend! Deanna Hi Families! Announcements:
I hope you all had a great week. We had another fun week at school! On Monday, VT childcare licensing came to do their annual surprise visit. It went swimmingly! Our licensor noted that she left with a smile on her face after all the joy and belly laughs from both kids and adults. These visits are conducted in all childcare places across the state to make sure we are following the correct guidelines in the childcare licensing regulations. If you are curious about the regs, you can read them HERE. In both classes this week, we talked about fruits and vegetables. We sorted fruits and vegetables and talked about which ones we really like and which ones we don’t like. It was great to hear so many friends express how much they like to eat these tasty foods! With the snow starting to melt outside, it is almost puddle season — my favorite time of the year. We spend so much time outside, especially as the weather gets warmer, so please make sure your child has lots of extra clothing in their cubby. If they come home changed, please send in more clothes to replenish their cubby. Thanks! The playground has become pretty wet and they have all been enjoying splashing around. Winter boots will start to get soggy pretty quickly, so it would be great to start sending in rain boots and warm socks so we can stay outside and play. This week, we spent some time learning about magnets. They used magnet wands to move paper clips through paint to make some fantastic art pieces. They were amazed at how quickly the paper clips stuck to the magnets. After that, I took small groups of 4-5 kids at a time to search the school for things that are magnetic. They tested many materials such as wood, poles, doors, books, and even people! They got a kick out of seeing grown ups and kids they knew walking the halls to test if they were magnetic. On Tuesday, the class were wolves out on the playground for almost the entire time. They had an underground wolf restaurant and a wolf house. When we got back inside, we made a shared story together where each child took a turn to tell us what happened next. After we finished writing the story, they took a vote on what to name the story and came up with “One Wolfie Day: An Adventure”. Please see the picture below to see the story. Ask Your Child: Did you use a magnetic wand? What did it stick to at school? What did it not stick to? (Bonus AYC for MT class): Did you write a story about wolves? What happened in it? Can we read the story together? I look forward to meeting with you all next week at conferences to talk about your wonderful kids! Deanna Hi Families! Announcements:
MASKS: Starting on Monday, March 14th, masks will be optional at Rumney. I know this brings up a lot of big feelings, so please take some time for yourself to process this big change. Here are a few things summarized from Maria’s letter that you received this week:
We had a pretty wet beginning of the week! The MT class had a great time seeing each other after such a long break. They enjoyed playing outside in the giant puddles which were gone by Wednesday! The weather was extremely windy on Tuesday, so they got to play in the gym instead. I think the gym is everyone’s favorite place to play. The MT class got to play with spaghetti (the WTh class played with it last week). They were flexing their cutting skills while picking up the colored spaghetti and cutting it to little pieces. I’ve noticed that so many friends like to use scissors and use them in a meaningful way (example: getting scissors to open a bag at snack). While cutting at home, please encourage your child to have their thumb on top to guide them to holding scissors correctly. Sitting behind them in a chair and guiding them with your hand on their hand is a great way for younger kiddos to practice. Cutting with scissors can be tricky for kids this age, as they are building the muscles in their fingers. On Wednesday, it was pretty icy on the hill. We decided to trek over to the rock garden and they had a blast. They were jumping and climbing on the rocks. They were also picking up some of the smaller, albeit heavy rocks, trying to stack them. A few pals were individually struggling trying to pick them up, but then decided to work together and had success! On Thursday we played with shaving cream AND gelatin! Both had toys/manipulatives inside for them to dig out. They loved it! Ask Your Child: What was it like outside? What happens when the ice melts? How does the ice melt? Where did you play outside (playground, hill, rock garden). Enjoy your weekend, Deanna Hi Families! I hope you all had a lovely vacation with your kiddos. The WTh was excited to see each other again. They started the morning playing with some slime. I tried 3 different slime recipes and they all came out a little different. It was wonderful to see them use scissors to cut the slime. That is a great activity to practice scissor skills — it’s so goopy! Outside, we found huge snow mounds and they climbed them and slid down them the whole time. They had a blast. They also enjoyed chasing each other while carrying lots of snow. While carrying the snow, I mentioned that they are strong. I heard one friend mention that she is strong like her papa. The smallest things can be so empowering. During center time on both days, we used small lazy susans with paper taped to it. They enjoyed either spinning it or holding the marker. On Thursday, they tried to get letters out of frozen ice. They used many different methods like pouring warm water on the ice, hitting the ice with a spoon, and holding the ice with their hands. I look forward to seeing the MT kids, it’s been a long time! Ask Your Child: Did you play with slime? Did you use scissors? What did the slime feel like? Enjoy your weekend, Deanna |
