Ms. Murray's Classes
Hello Families! Announcements:
We have spent so much time outside this week, it has been a blast. Many older students are putting on all of their winter gear independently, which is so exciting to see! They are extremely proud of themselves for being able to do that. The snow on our playground has been plentiful and has been the start of many games between peers. On Wednesday, many classmates played PJ Masks, running around saving the day. Albeit a short week for the MW crew, they sure made it worthwhile. They are spending their days making deeper connections with their peers, and helping each other out. It is wonderful to watch these connections from the beginning, seeing how they will be peers for a very long time :) At centers this week, we had beads in the sensory table. Buried in the beads, there were padlocks and keys. The padlocks had a shape on them and they had to dig through the beads to find the key with the corresponding shape on the key tag. Many students referenced other things that have keys, such as houses and cars. Some thought those keys went to my car and could go and start it up if they went to the parking lot! The fire station is still up and running, and will likely go until next week. Dramatic play themes last for as long as the children have interest, which typically runs 3-4 weeks. Below is some information I found from an article that promotes healthy gender development in young children. Ms. Honi and I have noticed many discussions - in both classes - of gender reinforcement of certain things. For example (not heard in the classroom, but general examples): blue is a boy color, girls can't play here, boys can't wear dresses, etc. The article is long, and is mainly for teachers and providers, but if you are interested in reading it, please email me and I will send it along. The goal is to make every child not feel limited by their gender identity. Please reach out if you have any questions!
Ask Your Child: Were there locks and keys in the sensory table this week? What were on the locks? How did you get them open? Have a great weekend! Ms. Murray

Hi Folks, Announcements:
Ms. Honi sent me updates during the week, and mentioned that on Monday, the kids painted flames with red and orange paint to decorate the fire station in our dramatic play. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Ms. Honi cut out different shapes for the kids to make fire trucks out of construction paper and Honi added their pictures to the window of each child's fire truck! They are decorated around the class, check them out next time you are in! On Thursday, we ventured out into the woods due to the great temperature and enjoyed all of the fresh snow. They loved shaking trees and getting snow all over them! Enjoy this long weekend, Ms. Murray Hi Families! Announcements:
We had a great first full week back after vacation. Everyone was excited to see all of their friends. We also started the Fire Station in our dramatic play! About the Fire Station: 4 children can go into the fire station at a time. One child works as the 911 operator. Everyone has practiced saying "911, what's your emergency?". We have also discussed when to call 911, such as a house fire, a car accident, or if someone in your family is injured badly and needs medical attention. While one child is working as the 911 operator, taking phone calls, the other three wait for the operator to radio over to them and tell them where to go and what the emergency is. So far, many fires have been put out, cats have been rescued from trees, and family members have been helped! On Wednesday, they worked on patterns using pictures related to the fire station. Below is a photo of what one of the patterns looked like: Together, we would identify each picture in the pattern and talk about what came next. They would find those pictures on the table and glue them on to finish the pattern. On Wednesday and Thursday, we enjoyed playing with oobleck, which is a mixture of corn starch and water. They all had so much fun! They moved it around as it was a liquid, made it into a solid and then watched it "melt" back into a liquid. This is a fun (but a little messy) project to try at home, too! Ask Your Child: Did you play with oobleck this week? What color was it? Tell me how it felt in your hands. Have a lovely weekend, Ms. Murray Hi Families! Announcements:
This will be a relatively quick update. Photos below are from the week before vacation and yesterday. The week before vacation was a blast! We enjoyed celebrating pajama day and watching the movie, The Snowy Day. We also finished up our Artist in Residency with Ethan Fielder. It was great! Yesterday, we talked about how to turn our dramatic play into a fire station. Below is a photo of what the TTh class came up with for what firefighters can do, and what they need to do their job. Starting on Monday, it will be ready for them to play in! Yesterday, we studied the artist Piet Mondrian, and learned about his art style. Next week, the MW class will learn about him as well. They are quite excited to learn about all these different artists! Coming back to school after an extended break can be challenging for kids. You might notice them being a little extra tired next week and might have a hard time dropping off or picking up. Enjoy the weekend! Ms. Murray |
