Rumney Preschool
Ms. Murray's Classes
Hi Pre-K Families, Announcements:
Another fun week in the books! As the school year progresses, I am seeing these wonderful connections that they are continuing with one another. These kids will be together for quite some time at Rumney, and it's a gift to be able to see these friendships blossom at the very beginning. On Monday, we did a name craft with glue and pipe cleaners. I wrote their names with marker and they used glue bottles to glue over their name. They took pipe cleaners and put them on. It was a great fine motor activity. Squeezing glue bottles can be quite tricky at this age, and they really worked their muscles! On Tuesday, we created lanterns for the River of Light Lantern Parade. More information about it can be found in the weekly school newsletter, the Wildcat Weekly. They used crayons to do rubbings of hearts and an outline of the state of Vermont. They will be going on home the week after Thanksgiving. We will do these on Monday with the Monday/Wednesday class. Fun art happened all week! On Wednesday, we painted on the snow using different brushes, sponges, and rollers.. On Thursday, we made salt paintings with glue, salt, and watercolor. Next week is a short week, but filled with tons of fun! I won’t be posting a blog post next week, but will add pictures from next week into the blog post the following week. I hope you all have a safe time away from school next week. Have a great weekend! Deanna

Hi Pre-K Families, Announcements:
Thank you for the wonderful conferences! It is a true pleasure to talk to you about your children. Monday/Wednesday crew, I missed seeing your kiddos this week. I look forward to seeing them again next week! Eliza had a great day with them on Monday. Here are some phrases we use in the classroom and their meanings. You may hear your child mention these phrases at home:
About a Sad Circle: Yesterday, some of the kids were feeling a little blue on our way in from ECO. I wanted to make sure their feelings were heard and understood by classmates and adults, so we sat down for a circle and called it a sad circle. Each child who was feeling sad explained why they were (I wanted to go first but X went first, etc). I helped the kids format their questions to one another, but they all truly lead the conversation. They even did their own sad circle by themselves back in the classroom. I asked if they wanted me to join them and they told me that they "got it" and didn't need my help. How amazing! On Tuesday, the kids initiated fairy tale play outside during ECO. They acted out Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. They all took turns being either the story teller, red riding hood, the wolf, or the three pigs. There's a new castle set and additional pieces to the trains/train tracks. They worked together as a whole class to build a very big train track with bridges and had the track split off into different directions. We kept it out all day long for them to play with it. At ECO yesterday, we spent about 30 minutes looking for good climbing trees. We settled on one that we found, and we did some risky play by climbing it. Each child only climbed as far as they felt comfortable with, and had a great time jumping off of it while holding my hands. If you are interested in learning the benefits of risky play, here is a great resource. Have a great weekend & stay safe, Deanna Hi Pre-K Families, Announcements:
How to sign up for conferences:
The snow arrived just as fast as it disappeared! The beginning of the week was very exciting for all the kids. They are starting to get the hang of putting on their gear and getting help for the tricky parts like zippers, boots, and that last glove. They are all enjoying creating things with the snow and cooking up some tasty food in the pots and pans. On Monday, they made pictures of themselves in the snow by gluing their face on winter gear. That helped them practice exactly what they need to wear outside to stay warm! Both classes have been spending time discussing hibernation. We have read a few books about hibernation and were figuring out what animals hibernate and which ones do not. Both classes contributed to a big hibernation picture that included a fox, rabbit, and bear. We read Time to Sleep by Denise Fleming, which walks us through a handful of animals that are getting ready to hunker down for the winter. On Wednesday, we spent all of our ECO time rolling giant snowballs. They wanted to make them into a snowman, but they made them too big! They worked together to help one another if a snowball got stuck down a ditch. They celebrated by standing on top of their snowballs, and they were so proud of themselves. This type of child driven activity teaches kids how to help each other in a natural way. In the beginning, they were asking me to help them and all trying to make the biggest snowball to "win". By the end of ECO, they were all collaborating and making sure they were all having fun. With a such a small class, they act like a family! On Thursday, we spent most of our ECO time talking about catapults. They saw the giant snowballs from the day before and were trying to move them. Since they had become harder over night, it was challenging for them to move them. One by one, each child came up with an idea. Djuna found a large branch and shimmied it under the ball and tried to jump on it to "send it to the sky". After that attempt, they all worked together to make smaller snowballs and find strong branches to send the snowballs up. After we got inside, we made mini catapults with popsicle sticks. Both classes used play doh this week and used scissors with it. A few of them commented on how easily the scissors cut the play doh. They made caves for animals to hibernate and tall structures! They are working their small muscles in their fingers with this activity. More and more practice like this is important for handwriting as they get older. I look forward to "seeing" you for conferences. Discussing your wonderful kids is one of my favorite things to do! Enjoy the beautiful weather coming our way, Deanna |
