Ms. Murray's Classes
Hi Families! Announcements:
I’m glad it finally stopped snowing. I hope I didn’t jinx us by saying that. The kids have enjoyed not needing anything but a jacket to go outside to play. With less of a transition, this means we get a few minutes extra outside! The kid on Monday and Tuesday enjoyed the flower shop. They took all the flowers and brought them over to the classroom library for a wedding. No one knew who was actually getting married, but it was fun! On Tuesday, the class did a directed drawing. What is a directed drawing? “Directed drawings are a step by step approach to drawing something. The teacher guides, or directs, students in the steps to create a drawing.” While I believe that process art over product art is better, here are some benefits to directed drawing once in a while: practice drawing shapes, crossing the midline when drawing, following directions, taking turns, and working on pencil grip. Their birds came out great! They are hanging up inside our classroom. Check them out next time you are in. I missed the Wed/Thurs kiddos this week! I was told they had a fantastic day on Thursday with Crystal, Kim, and Mrs. May. Both classes painted paper plates yellow and dropped sunflower seeds on the plates. They all enjoyed this because they got to eat some sunflower seeds! Next week, they will work together to measure how tall they are and that will be their sunflower stem. Ask Your Child: Did you read a book about fruits and vegetables? What color fruit/vegetable is your favorite? Why? [Then have your child ask you the same question] Deanna

Hi Families! Announcements:
We had a great last week of school before vacation. Something I always notice is that after April vacation, they start to look a lot older! I can’t wait to see them again after break. Thanks to the idea from the lovely Ms. Babcock across the hall, the kids on Monday did some sewing with burlap, an embroidery hoop, and some yarn with plastic needles. They were very proud of themselves and worked diligently on their pieces. We will continue to do more work like this with both classes after break. On Tuesday, we took a walk through the woods to see the StoryWalk that was installed out there. StoryWalks were created at Kellogg-Hubbard in Montpelier and they are used all around the country! You may have seen them around VT. The story, Salamander Sky, was written by a former Rumney teacher and Middlesex resident, Katy Farber. She is fantastic! The story is about helping salamanders cross the roads safely. What was really special was the story went through the woods and ended at the vernal pool. If you have a chance over vacation, it would be a great activity to do with your kids! When we got to the vernal pool, we didn’t see anything. Word in the halls is that there were many, many wood frogs and eggs there yesterday! We now have a flower shop in the dramatic play. A group of 2-3 kids each came into the flower shop with me as they learned about the area and told me what they saw. They started playing in there and enjoyed being either a customer or a worker, and buying or taking care of flowers. Some of the flowers cost upward of 100 dollars, which I thought was a little steep! In both classes this week, we read a story called A Mushroom in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg. The story is very similar to The Hat by Jan Brett. It is about an ant, a butterfly, a mouse, a bird, and a rabbit all trying to find cover in the rain. They hide under the mushroom and eventually, the mushroom can fit everyone under it. They are all confused but then find out that mushrooms grow in the rain. It was a great story about predictions. On Thursday in the morning, the kids arrived to different colored chalk in small bags with wooden hammers. They immediately got to work and started crushing up that chalk! Later on in the day, they mixed it with water to create paint and enjoyed painting with it. Also on Thursday, they enjoyed a long play time out at the rock garden and played a fun game about statues! Ask Your Child: Did you read a book about an ant and a mushroom? What happened? What happens to mushrooms in the rain? Fingers crossed it doesn’t rain the entire vacation! Deanna |
