Ms. Murray's Classes
Hi Pre-K Families! Announcements:
Last Day of Pre-K Info: We typically end one week before the rest of the older grades in order for me to clean out the entire classroom and pack it all up for the summer. This year, the last day of preschool will be Thursday, June 10th. That last week of school will be filled with fun outdoor activities (weather depending) and celebrating the end of our year. It was certainly a different type of school year, but your kids and I had a wonderful time together. The week before and last week of school, I will be sending home each child with a myriad of items such as: their extra clothes, any leftover art work, name tags, etc. We had so much fun indoors and out this week. On Monday and Tuesday, the kids arrived to many chairs on the rug. I let them know those chairs could be anything they wanted them to be. So much imagination blossomed! On Monday, the chairs became drivers seats for monster trucks, many trucks needed to stop for gas and one didn’t need gas because it was electric. On Tuesday, the chairs became seats on a boat that turned into a submarine. This activity is something great do at home with your kiddos and other siblings, too! We spent time in the big climbing tree at the rock garden all week long. All the kids were taking calculated risks while they climbed. You might hear them say this: “The most important part of climbing is your feet.” I said that quite a bit throughout the week. Being a climber myself, I know the importance of foot work and having places where your feet are secure to push yourself up. In the beginning of the week, many kids were reaching for higher branches to try to pull themselves up, and by the end, they were looking for knots on the trees to secure their feet. Their confidence from Monday and Tuesday to Wednesday and Thursday was amazing to see! Another phrase I like to use (which I may have borrowed from one of our wonderful teachers, Ben Weiss…) is: “what’s your plan?” Before any of the kids walk across rocks, climb something, etc, I always ask what their plan is so they can slow down for a moment to figure it out. When kids are having fun, it can sometimes be hard for them to think steps ahead and just “do” instead. Asking what their plan is can be a helpful way for them to pause and build critical thinking skills which is a great transferrable skill as they get older. On Wednesday and Thursday, musical instruments were brought out to the playground. Both classes ended up doing a marching band/musical parade all around the playground! There were xylophones, drums, bells, shakers, and rhythm sticks. Each child tried almost all of the different instruments as they marched around the playground. Inside this week, we used q-tips to fill in pictures with small dots on them. Using q-tips to dot pictures is a great pre-writing skill — even if your child is already writing. It strengthens their finger muscles and helps them be more precise. We also spent some time punching out shapes with our paper punchers and glueing them on to different designs on construction paper, which is another great fine motor skill for their hands! Have a great and sunny weekend, Deanna
